Ray Vanderby was born in Apeldoorn Holland in 1953. He immigrated to Australia in 1959 and at 11 years of age he suddenly started playing piano by ear at the local Sunday School Hall. The following year he performed his first show as the “youngest semi-professional organist in Australia”. In 1967 Ray won first prize in the organ section of the Bathurst Eisteddfod and in 1970 his band Eros won 2nd prize in the Hoadleys Battle of the Sounds Central West division. He became a piano tuner with W.H. Palings, moved to Sydney and worked with the country’s top session players at EMI 301 recording studios. It was fate that by chance Ray tuned ex Easybeats George Young’s piano who after hearing him play, arranged for him to tour the Hard Road album with Steve Wright. This opened doors for Ray so from 1972 to 1978 Ray played keyboards with Stevie Wright, Blackfeather (2 line-ups), Marcia Hines/Jackie Orszaczky, Doug Parkinson, Band of Light, Jon English and Leo De Castro.  Ray Vanderby also formed his own original bands Eros, 98 Degrees, 93-D, Cosmic Nomads, Ray Vanderby Hammond Combo, Ray Vanderby Trio and the Ray Vanderby Quartet. His band won 2nd prize on Star Search loosing to the Umbilical Brothers and he appeared on the Super Flying Fun Show, MTV, Countdown Revolution, The Midday Show, Asylum and Noise TV with film clips aired on ABC Rage. Ray has also played big shows supporting Joe Cocker, Boomtown Rats and Osibisa. He signed record contracts with Mighty Boy/Virgin and Possum/BMG and in 1991 Ray won 1st prize in the WROC/BMG Australian Copyright National Song Writing Competition. He also went on to perform at the Australian Blues Festival, Thredbo Blues Festival and Bluestone Blues festival. Ray Vanderby taught himself how to play piano and jazz being influenced by Mahavishnu Orchestra/John McLaughlan, Jimmy Smith, Oscar Peterson, Andre Previn and Mike Nock. In between rock tours he would play the downstairs piano at Sydney’s Rocks Push and drop in on Daly Wilson Big Band rehearsals. In1980 he was the resident interval pianist at the Tivoli Theatre in Sydney and went on to perform at the Newcastle and Cronulla Jazz festivals. Throughout his career Ray composed and recorded 5 world music albums, 5 blues albums, 3 progressive rock albums and 5 contemporary jazz albums. Vanderby worked the Sydney music scene for 20 years, then 1 year in Newcastle, a year in Adelaide followed by 3 years in Melbourne. In 2009 he formed the Orange Jazz Club inc. and his group the Ray Vanderby Quartet continue to delight jazz audiences wherever they perform.
